Why Timing Matters
Market experts are often right about the long term and wrong about the next few weeks. Anyone who could say with certainty that a share will rise 1% tomorrow would soon be the richest person on earth. Technical patterns cannot foresee natural disasters, political shocks or sudden shifts in sentiment.
The most famous market forecaster in history, W. D. Gann (1878–1955), is reputed to have made more than $50 million in a few years. He was not only a trader but an astrologer, who used planetary cycles to forecast market trends, and described some of his techniques in The Tunnel Thru the Air, 45 Years in Wall Street and New Stock Trend Detector.
Our team translated his published methods into computer programs and tested them on 30 years of Indian market data. They did not hold up: the published formulas are incomplete, and the methods Gann kept to himself were what brought his success. Stock market astrology has developed less than it could have, simply because too little research has been done – but a few rules of thumb have proved genuinely useful.
Rahu and Saturn: The Two Key Planets
Short term Rahu – the trader’s planet
A strong, well-placed Rahu favours trading and speculation, and its Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha are good periods to invest. If Rahu is badly placed, stay away from the market – even with a strong Jupiter you may read the market correctly, yet your own trades are likely to fail.
Long term Saturn – the investor’s planet
A strong Saturn makes a patient, long-term winner. Such a person should stay invested rather than trade, as their long-term view of a stock tends to come true. In the many horoscopes we have studied, people with a strong Saturn have built wealth from the market more than anyone else. A weak Saturn calls for caution with long-term holdings, including mutual funds.
If Neither Planet Is Strong
Most individual traders lose money – SEBI studies have found that around nine out of ten individual traders in equity derivatives make a loss. This is not only bad luck. Prices follow patterns driven by large players, and when most small investors pile into the same pattern, it fails – like a boat that floats well with a few people aboard but sinks when everyone climbs in. If you still wish to invest, follow these two rules:
1
Time it with your 11th and 12th house lords
These two planets decide when the market can pay you. The golden rule is to buy low and sell high:
Buy in the dasha of your 12th house lord (house of expenditure)Sell in the dasha of your 11th house lord (house of gains)
2
Choose sectors ruled by your favourable planet
Invest in companies from industries governed by the strongest benefic planet in your chart, using the table below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which planet is good for stock market gains?
A strong, well-placed Rahu favours short-term and speculative gains, while a strong Saturn favours patient, long-term investing. Jupiter helps judgement, but on its own it does not guarantee market success.
When should I buy and when should I sell?
A traditional rule is to buy during the dasha of your 12th house lord (the house of expenditure) and sell during the dasha of your 11th house lord (the house of gains).
Which houses show stock market gains?
The 5th house governs speculation and trading, the 11th house gains and the 2nd house accumulated wealth. The 8th house shows sudden gains and losses.
Can astrology guarantee stock market profits?
No. Astrology can suggest favourable periods, temperament and sectors, but markets carry real risk and no method is certain. It is not financial advice.
